Dubai: Some 1,566 out of a total of 25,434 different kinds of documents examined by Dubai police last year, turned out to be fake, according to police.

The forgery and counterfeit experts at the general department of forensic sciences of Dubai Police said the number of fake and counterfeit document cases declined this year from the previous year by 183 cases.

Expert Muna Salem Al Suwaidi said on Tuesday that fake signatures and handwriting topped the list of forgery cases last year.

“Around 609 handwriting and signature cases were examined last year,” she said.

She said those cases included examining cheques, applications for residency visas, applications for phone contracts and other related issues.

Al Suwaidi added that out of 606 passports examined last year, 370 were proven fake.

She said that the number of forged credit cards reduced this year as only 29 cases out of 482 examined cards compared to 50 forged cases last year were recorded.

Expert Hassan Ali Zain Al Abdeen said that at least 198 cases of counterfeit bank notes were referred to the court last year. The counterfeit currency notes included UAE dirham, dollar, Euro, Indian Rupees and many others.
