JEDDAH - French energy firm Alstom announced that it has won a contract worth around €170 million ($227 million) in Saudi Arabia to supply steam turbine generators for the Shuqaiq power plant.
Alstom was awarded the deal by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the lead contractor of the project.
Under the contract, the French firm will supply four 720MW steam turbine generator sets for the plant, which is due to begin commercial operations in 2017.
Alstom's contract includes the engineering, manufacturing, supply and field services for all the four steam turbines and generators, and will also include all direct control and auxiliary systems.
The 2,650MW Shuqaiq power plant, located on Saudi's Red Sea coast, is expected to be among the world's most efficient facilities run on heavy fuel oil, a statement said.
The contract is Alstom's second Saudi energy deal this year - five months ago the French firm was selected to supply five 620MW steam turbines, generators, supercritical boilers and electrostatic precipitators and flue gas desulphurisation systems for the Yanbu 3 plant in the Kingdom.
Late last month, Alstom, as a member of the FAST consortium, also won a turnkey Riyadh metro project contract. The total value of this project stood at €6 billion ($8 billion), with Alstom's share amounting to over €1.2 billion ($1.6 billion), it said.
Alstom has secured another important contract in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia following its selection by lead contractor Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to supply 4 x 720 MW steam turbine generator sets for the Shuqaiq project. The contract is valued at approximately €170 million. The Shuqaiq plant is due to enter commercial operation in 2017.
Alstom's contract includes the engineering, manufacturing, supply and field services for all four steam turbines and generators, and will also include all direct control and auxiliary systems.
With the Alstom machines at its core, Shuqaiq will help Saudi Arabia expand generation base while minimizing environmental impact.
The new contract comes just five months after Alstom was picked to supply 5 x 620 MW steam turbine, generators, supercritical boilers as well as electrostatic precipitators and flue gas desulphurisation systems for the Yanbu 3 plant in Saudi Arabia.
"We are proud to be selected by HHI as partner for this large and important project. This second substantial order for Saudi Arabia this year underlines Alstom's leading position in high efficiency steam turbine technologies," said Andreas Lusch, Senior Vice President for Alstom's steam business.
Currently more than one-fifth of Saudi electricity is generated on equipment supplied by Alstom, including those for the Shoaiba thermal power plant. With a capacity of 5,600MW and known as 'the Giant of the Middle East', the plant is the biggest in the region.
