Dubai, UAE: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) organised a workshop on sustainability for stakeholders from government organisations, partners, and suppliers at the Raffles Hotel, in Dubai. This comes in line with the vision of the wise leadership to spread the culture of sustainability in Dubai and the UAE, and as part of DEWA's keenness to instill a culture of sustainability among all stakeholders.

The two-day workshop included many themes on sustainability and green transformation, as well as fruitful and diverse discussions with the audience to gather the information and data needed to prepare the Sustainability Report 2017, as per the GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards.

“We acknowledge the importance of establishing sustainability in all aspects of life, and strive to achieve the UN’s sustainable development goals 2030. This is in line with the vision and directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and our vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility. This important workshop is organised annually, under the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to achieve sustainable development in Dubai. We aim to interact directly with stakeholders, and discuss sustainability issues in all its environmental, social and economic dimensions, particularly for climate change. This supports our efforts to ensure the success of our initiatives, such as the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to provide 7% of Dubai's energy from clean energy sources by 2020, 25% by 2030, and 75% by 2050,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“Over the next few years, we look forward to contributing to addressing the negative impacts of climate change, and global warming, by reducing carbon emissions from development sectors in production, processing, transportation, waste, and others. We will collaborate with our public and private partners, to achieve the Carbon Abatement Strategy, which was launched by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, to reduce carbon emissions by 16% by 2021.  The workshop is a strong impetus to DEWA’s efforts to provide human resources with the necessary knowledge, to contribute effectively to the achievement of sustainability to ensure a brighter future for generations to come. This is in line with the UAE Vision 2021 to create a safe and sustainable environment while achieving a balance between economic and social development, and it also complements the objectives of the Dubai Plan 2021, to make Dubai sustainable with its resources, whose environmental elements are clean, healthy, and sustainable,” concluded Al Tayer.
