Dubai: Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of online retail giant Amazon, is opening offices in Dubai and Bahrain next year to accelerate the rapid adoption of cloud computing in the Middle East and North Africa.

Terry Wise, vice-president for global alliances, channels and partner ecosystem at Amazon Web Services, told Gulf News that the Dubai office will open on January 1 at Dubai Internet City and the Bahrain office after that.

He did not disclose the area of the office when asked but said that it is going to be quite substantial. The Dubai office will support organisations of all sizes, from start-ups to government institutions and some of the Middle East’s established enterprises.

The US company is also going to recruit account managers, solutions architects, partner manager, professional services consultants, support staff and more for its Dubai office.

“We selected Dubai by looking at the business climate, smart city initiatives and incredible innovation that is going on here. With Amazon’s commitment to innovation, we make customers and citizens happy,” Wise said.

Dubai has been on cloud companies’ radar as most of the top tech companies have a base in the emirate.

Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, had launched its data centre in Dubai last month in a joint venture with Dubai-based Meraas Holdings.
