Gaza - About 80 percent of Palestinian citizens living in the Gaza Strip rely on humanitarian assistance to meet the basic needs, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said.

In a report released on Tuesday, the UNRWA said that it had provided aid to about 80,000 refugees in Gaza in 2000, but the number skyrocketed to more than 930,000 now. The in-kind assistance presented to the families help them allocate their limited resources to buying other basic needs, like vegetables, meat and stationary to their children, the UN report added.

The Israeli blockade of the coastal enclave, which entered its 10th year, as well as the armed conflicts have had their toll on the trade sector, and pushed many citizens below the poverty line, the report noted.
