Dubai: The Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection (CCCP) sector in Dubai Economy has resolved 105,258 consumer complaints between 2010 and the first half of 2017.

The CCCP reported an average of 15,000 complaints per year through its contact centre, Ahlan Dubai.

The complaints received were from various sectors, with services accounting for 35 per cent of the total number of complaints, followed by the electronics sector at 22 per cent, automotive sector at 12 per cent, textiles and personal items at eight per cent, furniture at three per cent, car rental at one per cent, and others at 19 per cent.

“The retail sector is a key driver in the development of our local economy and we are committed to raising Dubai’s reputation as the ideal location and business platform for selling and buying at both the local and international levels,” said Mohammad Ali Rashid Lootah, CEO of CCCP sector.

He pointed out the CCCP sector is keen to promote transparency and facilitate the relationship between traders and consumers through an ideal environment with a high culture of awareness and neutrality in buying and selling.

The consumer complaints received at the CCCP varied with 22 per cent related to product failure, 18 per cent to cash refund, and 10 per cent to non-compliance with agreements.

Commercial fraud issues also resulted in six per cent of the complaints followed by five per cent involving replacement complaints, and four per cent on extra fees.

Complaints related to non-compliance with the price list constituted three per cent of the total, while those on defects in the device accounted for two per cent, non-compliance with warranty terms (two per cent), damage and breakage in the product (one per cent), and miscellaneous complaints accounted for the rest.

The CCCP has diversified the channels of communication with consumers, starting with Ahlan Dubai, and expanding to receiving complaints via email, and social media channels including Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

“Consumer awareness in Dubai is definitely on the rise and the workshops and campaigns regularly conducted by the CCCP sector have contributed substantially to encouraging consumers to raise issues and seek solutions,” added Lootah.
