The weather’s getting slightly cooler by the day and it’s time to get out and get fit for free. Yasalam’s Get Driver Fit (GDF) programme brought to us by Daman’s ActiveLife returns to engage the community’s health and fitness once again. Bigger and better this time, offering more variety in its free classes than ever before.

“It’s the fifth year of GDF and the demand for different classes has increased. As a result, we’ve put on more classes than we’ve ever had and at different timings. We’re offering boxing, yoga, HIIT, functional fitness, circuit training, driver bootcamp, and a whole array of different exercises. We’re trying to give as many options to the participants as possible,” says Phil Smith, senior personal trainer at Haddins Fitness and GDF trainer.

This week marks the initial phase where residents register for GDF. A physical conditioning assessment took place at Yas Marina Circuit last Sunday to launch the free seven-week fitness initiative.

I joined in to have a peek at the kind of training GDF participants will go through in the next couple of weeks and I strongly recommend that people grab this opportunity. With the backing of Daman’s ActiveLife, GDF aims to make waves in UAE’s fitness scene by inviting everyone to adopt an active lifestyle.

Dr Sven Rohte, chief commercial officer at National Health Insurance, Daman, explains: “We happily support an initiative like Get Driver Fit because it’s important to activate the community. I think Get Driver Fit is a perfect example of how to break down the barrier. You can try different things. We are very pleased that we’ve supported this for the 5th time. For years we’ve been working on this objective. It’s a long term commitment to really encourage people to try and then to change their behaviour.”

GDF classes officially kick-off today, Friday, with an 8-9am Beach Circuit at The Residence at St Regis Resort, Abu Dhabi. Do not fret if you haven’t registered yet and missed this one as there are tons coming your way. You and your friends can still register online and join the next available class.

“The more people we can get the better. We’ve had classes of a hundred people before... The atmosphere is just great,” adds Smith, who’ll lead most of the Get Driver Fit classes for the next six weeks.

Locations for the free classes are spread across the capital like Umm Al Emarat Park and Zayed Sports City, to name a few, to reach as many residents as possible. The views are definitely added attractions, so what are you waiting for?
