Agreement Underscores SchlumbergerSema Position as a Major EMV Migration Partner for the Global Banking Community
PARIS - SchlumbergerSema, a business unit of Schlumberger Limited (NYSE:SLB), today announced a multi-year agreement with MasterCard International to supply MasterCard's member financial institutions with smart card services to support them in accelerating their EMV smart card migrations. SchlumbergerSema will provide the smart card services to MasterCard members at a competitive rate.
Smart cards have two major advantages over traditional magnetic stripe cards -- greater security against fraud and the capability of supporting a wide range of differentiating services, such as loyalty and e-purse. In order to meet the varying needs of diverse financial institutions and regional conditions, SchlumbergerSema will offer a full range of EMV-compliant cards to MasterCard's members, complete with the M/Chip debit/credit application and additional space available for highly sophisticated value-added applications.
"With our recent launch of the OneSMART MasterCard initiative and more than 100 million MasterCard, Maestro, Mondex, and Clip-branded smart cards around the world, MasterCard demonstrates to the marketplace how and why we are the best partner for smart cards," said Toni Merschen, senior vice president, Chip and Mobile Commerce/Wireless, MasterCard International. "SchlumbergerSema has the track record, the production capability, and the vital global expertise our members need to ensure a smooth transition to chip technology."
Under the agreement, SchlumbergerSema, which has just been named the world's leading provider of microprocessor smart cards by Gartner Dataquest, will produce the cards to a standard finish. Members will have their choice of chip capacity, ranging from 16Kbytes to 64Kbytes, as well as selecting either the MULTOS or the SchlumbergerSema Palmera Protect Java-based platform for their cards. All of the cards will feature M/Chip, MasterCard's EMV debit/credit application.
"Adoption of the EMV standard brings substantial benefits to banks, retailers and consumers worldwide, and MasterCard's initiatives enable the acceleration of those benefits," said Jorgen Rasmussen, president, Cards, SchlumbergerSema. "We are delighted to be working in such a productive partnership."
With more than 20 years experience in the financial sector, SchlumbergerSema offers one of the strongest and most extensive portfolio of EMV solutions for customers in the banking, insurance and investment industries. SchlumbergerSema has sold more than 2.5 billion smart cards to date, has an installed base of 750,000 point-of-sale terminals, and builds on a track record of EMV migration consulting projects worldwide. With its extensive international network of offices and partners, SchlumbergerSema is able to offer its customers a personalized solution, complete with local customer support.
