Cairo, Egypt: In continuation of their long-standing partnership, Mastercard and the World Food Programme (WFP) have announced a collaboration to provide up to 1 million school meals this Ramadan with the support of Amazon Egypt.

For every Amazon.eg website or app transaction made by customers in Egypt using a Mastercard during Ramadan, Mastercard will donate the value of one school meal to WFP, which will distribute the meals to children in need.

School meals can have a life-changing impact on children. For many vulnerable children, a school meal is the only regular nutritious meal they receive all day. This serves as a strong motivating factor for parents to keep children in school, as opposed to making them stay at home to assist with household chores and field work – a negative practice that affects especially girls. Education empowers children to achieve their dreams, improve their lives, and lift their whole families out of poverty.

“We have been championing child nutrition in partnership with WFP for over a decade in line with Mastercard’s philosophy of doing well by doing good. Through the 1 Million School Meals campaign, we aim to make a meaningful difference to the lives of children around the world, demonstrating the power of partnerships. We are delighted to join forces with  Amazon and WFP once again as we aim to make a lasting impact on the communities that need it most,” said Ngozi Megwa, Senior Vice President, Digital Partners & Enablers, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa, Mastercard.

“Achieving food security is a collective responsibility that involves every individual around the world. The 1 Million School Meals campaign is a model of how WFP and our partners strive to forge channels that provide an opportunity for everyone to make a difference with a school meal. In Egypt, the school feeding programme, is changing lives of children and their families, helping them meet their essential food needs while encouraging their education for a better future. Very proud of this collaboration which has brought an opportunity for action into the homes of consumers,” said WFP Representative and Country Director in Egypt, Praveen Agrawal.

Omar Elsahy, Amazon Egypt Country Manager, said: “We are very proud to be able to extend our support to the meaningful work that Mastercard and the World Food Programme are doing to help children in need during this time of year, given the current socio-economic challenges. We are always looking for ways to play a purposeful role in our communities and drive impact that truly makes a difference. Using our scale for good, we are thankful to be able to enable these meal donations by Mastercard through Amazon.eg this Ramadan, and look forward to seeing customers join in as they contribute to this worthy cause.”

Since 2012, Mastercard and its partners have contributed over US$45 million to WFP through cause marketing campaigns, consumer fundraising events, and emergency aid.
