Breakthrough Surgical Navigation System Provides Surgeons with Command and Control Centre For Information-Guided Surgery

Dubai, 24 January 2012 - Brainlab, a German leading provider of software-driven medical technology that supports targeted, less-invasive treatment, announced the launch of its new system: Curve™ Image Guided Surgery. Curve, a highly-advanced navigation system for information guided surgery, was unveiled for the first time in the Middle East at Arab Health 2012 in Dubai under patronage of His Excellency Qadhi Saeed Al Murooshid, Director-General of the Dubai Health Authority, represented by Dr Mohammad Al Olama, CEO of the Hospital Services Sector at the DHA and in presence of Stefan Vilsmeier, President and CEO of Brainlab. The unveiling ceremony took place at the two-story Brainlab booth in the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre and was followed by a press conference.

Curve by Brainlab is the company's latest high-tech command and control centre for information guided surgery. It features next-generation image guidance software powering advanced 3D displays and hallmark Brainlab image enrichment. Curve boasts advanced technology like ultra-fast image updating when tracking instruments and can drive collaboration, bringing surgeons closer to colleagues, both near and far. Mobile wireless networking allows users to stream and record then push to linked workstations.

"Curve represents thousands of enhancements based on years of feedback from our customers. Incorporating user feedback has always been a priority for Brainlab and has helped to produce the ultimate surgical navigation experience," reiterated Stefan Vilsmeier, President and CEO of Brainlab, on the occasion of the launch. "We are helping to foster collaboration and potentially improving patient outcomes."

Using a human-centered design approach, Curve challenges conventional surgical utility, incorporating great ergonomics, two game-changing, multi-directional touch terminals, digital HD and hi-fi.

Stefan Vilsmeier also stated during the press conference held at Arab Health 2012: "When we started developing Curve, we set ourselves the goal to overcome the barriers of traditional navigation in the operating room. Our new navigation platform connects the operating room to the outside world through various interfaces. Surgeons can share and enrich data or consult with other medical experts at any time. Image Guided Surgery is now becoming Information Guided Surgery."

The new Brainlab operating system streamlines and simplifies launching software applications and displaying contents. Surgeons can shift easily from DICOM viewing to surgical navigation and video routing, controlling the clinical workflow with a touch of the permanent Home button, as well as optimise navigation with pre-op planning and surgical visualisation.

Multiple data ports allow surgeons to seamlessly connect to intra-operative imaging and surgical scopes, session-share by connecting with a Digital LightBox, stream to a remote workstation and transfer patient data, while cloud computing further facilitates safe and fast data share with Quentry, the Brainlab online clinical network.

Other benefits of the system include a telescopic stand; a motorized camera that can be adjusted effortlessly at any point during surgical intervention using steering buttons on the monitor; and, a laser pointer for great setup flexibility in almost any navigated surgical intervention. Eight multidirectional wheels with cable deflectors allow medical staff to rapidly manoeuvre Curve in and out of the operating room as required.
