Muscat – The sultanate will invest RO170mn over the next few years in the Digital Transformation Programme, which aims to enhance national competencies, Oman News Agency reported on Wednesday.

The programme, being implemented from 2021 to 2025, is carried out by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, and will include investments in improving processes, re-engineering government services and improving digital infrastructure.

The programme includes a roadmap for utilising modern techniques to develop public sector functioning, notably by creating digital platforms for services, as well as a legal and regulatory climate that empowers digital transformation.

Digital transformation is an executive programme of the National Digital Economy Programme and one of the main enablers to fulfil the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 by creating a flexible and innovative government agency, which will provide high quality, smart government services.

The vision of the Digital Transformation Programme stems from the need of enabling the government sector to work innovatively to provide smart services, adopt proactive measures, and offer a seamless digital experience to the electronic community.

The most important pillars of the programme are to simplify procedures and conduct proactive operations, including reviewing the current government services provided to beneficiaries – citizens, businessmen, employees and the government units. The programme takes into account classification of services, making information available, documenting procedures, and simplifying operations to ensure ease and speed of government response.

The volume of investment in the programme is expected to be RO170mn to be utilised in automating basic services, propagation of services via the Internet, development of centralised digital solutions, improvement of the digital infrastructure and empowerment of national teams specialised in digital transformation skills.
