Doha: Qatar Petroleum, all its subsidiaries, affiliates and leading foreign oil companies in Qatar will participate in a large environmental event to be held at the Qatar International Exhibition Centre starting on May 14.

The exhibition, which will mark the first Qatar Petroleum Environmental Day, will be held under the patronage of H E Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah, Second Deputy Premier, Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman of Qatar Petroleum (QP).

Officials yesterday said the first Qatar Petroleum Environment Day-2004 will highlight the sustainable development practised by leading companies in the energy and industrial sector in Qatar showcasing how progress can be in harmony with environment protection.

The event was initiated by the minister to promote environmental awareness among employees working in the energy and industry sector and their families, which in turn would have a positive effect for the whole community, said a QP statement.

The three-day event will be the largest exhibition of its kind ever staged in the Gulf region and is expected to attract up to 40,000 visitors.

The initiative is the first time leading companies in Qatar’s energy and industry sector have taken a coordinated approach to highlight their efforts to ensure that industrial development was in compliance with national and international regulations and standards and to ensure a cleaner and safer environment for generations to come.

In addition to Qatar Petroleum, the companies involved in the event include Qatargas, RasGas, Qafac, Qafco, Qapco, Qasco, Q-Chem, Oryx GTL, Ras Laffan Industrial City, Mesaieed Industrial City, Dukhan Operations and Halul Island and QP offshore operations, as well as international corporations operating in Qatar such as ExxonMobil, Shell, Total, ConocoPhillips, Dolphin Energy and Maersk.

The exhibition, based on a massive map of Qatar, will allow visitors to literally travel around Qatar in 90 minutes and see first hand the environmental work at Ras Laffan Industrial City and Mesaieed Industrial City, as well as operations at Dukhan and on Halul Island, and Qatar Petroleum’s facilities in Doha.

The event will include lectures and discussions on the environment.

Other activities will include a children’s drawing competition, traditional food stands and live entertainment. The exhibition will also showcase desert habitat and the traditional way of life.

Previously, the industrial cities of Ras Laffan and Mesaieed and Dukhan had held their own environment day celebrations.

This coordinated event by Qatar Petroleum, its subsidiaries and joint venture partners will better highlight the efforts being implemented, not just for the good of each individual operations centre, but for the State of Qatar and its citizens as a whole, the statement added.

Qatar Petroleum’s commitment to excellence in its environmental practises was recognised last year by receiving the Gulf Cooperation Council award as the Best Industrial Organisation adhering to Environmental Standards and Rules in the GCC.
