Amman - The Royal Institute for Inter-Faith Studies (RIIFS), in cooperation with the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs in Jordan, started a meeting to promote the Amman Message to contribute to good governance, human rights and fundamental freedoms, and to counter the root causes of terrorism and violence.
Under the slogan "Promotion of the Amman Message", the conference is held in cooperation with the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation (MoPIC), the British Council and funded by the European Union.
In his opening speech, Director of RIIFS Micheal Hamarneh said that fundamentalism is not a particular feature of specific religion, sect or race, but it is an emergency case evolved in special circumstances that have nothing to do with religions, spiritual values or good morals.
Hamarneh stressed that poverty, unemployment and lack of social justice are the grassroots of fundamentalism.
The two-day event brought together Muslims and Christian religious thinkers from Jordan, the Arab world and Europe.
Participants in the conference will tackle means of supporting the promotion of the Amman Message and further endorsing its religious credibility and humanist appeal.
They will also focus on how to utilize the message for the attainment of good governance in order to curb forms of religious violence, protect human rights and counteract the root causes of terrorism.
The conference aims at increasing the awareness at the national, regional and international levels of the Islamic values within the Amman Message to contribute in the eradication of stereotypes of Islam.
It also seeks to establish an effective coordination mechanism among the key stakeholders responsible for the promotion of the message.
The meeting also aims to pinpoint the inconsistencies of extremist discourses, utilizing their own theoretical and moral references and religious paradigms as well as to strengthen the administrative capacity of the key stakeholders for the promotion of the Amman Message.
