MUSCAT -- Several corporate organisations in the Sultanate have joined efforts of the government and the international community to raise funds by organising a golf tournament at the Ghala Wentworth Golf Course followed by a dinner party today. The event is aimed at raising funds to assist restore normalcy to the triple tragedy in Japan, which was triggered by a devastated earthquake, tsunami and the nuclear crisis. The event is also designed at conveying measures of solace and relief the victims.
The event will be held under the auspices of Dr Mohammed bin Hamed al Rumhy, Minister of Oil and Gas, and in presence of Seiji Morimoto, Japan's Ambassador to the Sultanate. All proceeds from the occasion will be donated to the 'Friends of Japan' special account at Bank Dhofar, which was opened by the ambassador to enable people and organisations that are so inclined to contribute funds towards the relief effort.
"We believe it is important to stand behind Japan in this time of crisis. Japan is a country with very long and special relationships with the Sultanate and its businesses. On the humanitarian level one cannot but be saddened by the loss of life and property, moved by the emotional shock that has affected so many and yet be uplifted by the many examples of courage and stoicism that the Japanese most affected have shown at this time," remarked Cheryl Buckley, the lead-organiser of the gathering of business representatives across Oman, ahead of the fundraising.
The occasion will be supported in mind and kind contributions of major corporate organisations and players in the market including Renaissance Services, Deloitte, Oman Holdings International, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Galfar Engineering, Oman Shipping Company, Grand Hyatt Hotel, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), Oman LNG, Qalhat LNG, Khimji Ramdas, Occidental of Oman, SNR Denton, Composite Pipe Industries, KPMG and Bahwan Engineering Company (BEC).
Japan has a long history of trade relations with the Sultanate of Oman, which imports vehicles, machinery and electrical appliances from Japan. Japan in turn imports oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Oman to power its industries. In 2008 for example, "Japan's export to Oman recorded $3.94 billion while its import from Oman marked $5.59 billion".
