MUSCAT: A conference on the geology of Oman and the entire Arabian Plate will be held in Muscat from January 7 to 9.

Being organised by the Department of Earth Sciences at the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), the  conference will present the latest developments across a broad spectrum of earth-science professions, including sedimentary and hard-rock geology, base and precious metals industry, petroleum geology, groundwater, geophysics, and geohazards.

The third edition of the three-day Global Geotourism Conference held recently in Muscat had called upon stakeholders to ensure that geo-tourism is incorporated in formulating and managing  sustainable tourism strategies.

The overall objective of this conference is to bring together earth scientists from all parts of the world under one platform  to encourage research and promote better understanding of geology, economic potential, and environments of the Arabian Plate and the Omani mountains.

The specific objectives of the conference are to provide a forum for presenting recent research on the geologic framework of the Arabian Plate, and to encourage the exchange of experience between scientists on the geological evolution of the region.

In a bid  to review new developments during the last 10 years and to promote ongoing geological research, the Department of Earth Sciences at SQU is organising this  conference in this series for 2012.

The programme will include oral and poster presentations and excursions as well.

The Department of Earth Sciences, has for the past 25 years been actively involved in advancing geological knowledge about the Arabian Peninsula in general and the Oman mountains in particular.

Progress in this understanding has been reviewed during two previous geological conferences on the Omani mountains in 1990 and 2001, which were attended by delegates from 37 countries.

At the conference, Mike Searle from  Oxford University, will talk on 'Obduction of the Oman Ophiolite',  while Leroy Sylvie from will focus on 'Structure and Evolution of the Southern Boundary of the Arabian Plate: from Rifting to Spreading of the Gulf of Aden'.

Llen Howard  from Petrogas Rima, will deliver a lecture on 'Oil in Oman - the Main Players So Far.

Adolphe Nicolas from  Monteplier University, France will throw light on 'High-Resolution Mapping in the Omani Ophiolite - Role of Water in Crustal Accretion and at Tips of Segments.'  Peter Kelemen from Columbia University, Abdulrahman Al Sharhan from UAE University and Henk Droste, Shell, Netherland will also deliver lectures.
