MUSCAT -- Three exhibitions that offer valuable insight into highly topical issues concerning the global environment, the harmonious lives of Muslims living in the United Kingdom and the success stories of urban regeneration projects in the UK were opened yesterday by Shaikh Abdullah bin Salim al Rawas, Minister of Regional Municipalities, Environment and Water Resources, at the Family Village in Qurum Natural Park. Present at the Muscat Festival joint exhibition organised by the British embassy and the British Council were Engineer Abdullah bin Abbas bin Ahmed, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, British Ambassador Noel Guckian and Steve McNulty, Director of British Council Oman.

The NorthSouthEastWest (NSEW) exhibition, which runs till January 29, is a major attraction at the British Council pavilion. NorthSouthEastWest is part of the British Council's ZeroCarbonCity initiative - a two-year global campaign to raise awareness and stimulate debate around climate change and the challenges faced by many countries. The exhibition draws on the work of 10 leading Magnum photographers who travelled to 12 locations around the world, capturing not only the impacts of global warming, but also the solutions which are being implemented north, south, east and west to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. The exhibition is located on the grass lawn outside the Family Village.

The British embassy stand hosts the Peter Sanders Art of Integration Exhibition: 'Islam in Britain's Green and Pleasant Lands'. Peter is a Muslim convert and is internationally recognised as one of the leading photographers of the Muslim world. In 2005, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office sponsored Peter to take a collection of photographs depicting Muslim life in Britain. This unique set of pictures is the result.

The British Council stand offers advice on study options in the UK. The stand is also home to the 'Old But New, New But Old' exhibition which is a display of 14 posters celebrating the diverse urban regeneration projects that have grown up across the UK in the last 10 years. Visitors can participate in a quiz, which in its grand prize draw on January 17, offers the top prize of a return flight to the UK with British Airways. The embassy stand also contains the interactive UK visa stand which provides visitors the opportunity to find out more about the new UK visa procedures being introduced in Oman during the coming year.
