The completed first phase of the new BD4 million Manama Souq was inaugurated yesterday in an official ceremony patronised by Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Premier instructed the concerned authorities to expedite work on the secon phase of the project so that it can be completed as soon as possible to become more competitive and attract a greater number of visitors, tourists and shoppers.
Prime Minister Prince Khalifa also stressed the importance of preserving the traditional shops housed in the old Manama Souq and to maintain the market's cultural and historic heritage.
Prince Khalifa stressed that the development of Manama Souq aims to raise the architectural and urban appeal of the area and to develop its infrastructure to attract shoppers. He said this would also encourage businessmen to expand their activities and maintain the cultural significance of the souq as an area that has been inherited by merchants who have done business there for centuries.
The Premier later took a trip around the souq where he met several traders and took a look at the merchandise on offer. Minister of Municipalities and Agricultural Affairs Jumaa Al Kaabi briefed the Premier on the steps that will be implemented in the second phase of the development project, which will cost an estimated BD2 million to complete.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of preserving historical sites as they form part of Bahrain's heritage and people. The Premier also stressed that places such as Manama Souq, as well as many old markets, have been upgraded throughout history and that developing them is something that is required on a constant basis.
Prince Khalifa also praised the efforts of the Ministry of Municipalities and Agricultural Affairs, other ministries and authorities, as well as the companies that have helped implement the project for maintaining the cultural aspects of the souq.
The souq has modern touches that complement the architectural and commercial movement that the Kingdom is witnessing, he said.
On the occasion, Dr. Al Kaabi stated that he was honoured that the Premier inaugurated the BD4 million project.
For their part, many traders and shopkeepers in the Manama Souq praised the Prime Minister's visitand his eagerness to open the first phase of the project.
They were equally impressed that the PM is personally following up on preparations to launch the second phase of development, and stressed that the Premier's support in developing Manama's market will contribute to revitalising the commercial sector and help merchants attain a better standard of living as well as attract more visitors and tourists to the market.
