Dubai Forensics experts will soon be able to find information from bugs, beetles and insects found on dead bodies.
Lieutenant Colonel Ahmad Mattar Al Muhairi, Acting Director of Forensic Sciences and Criminology Department of Dubai Police, said the Forensic Entomology department will help investigations.
“The development of the new section was done in accordance with development plan set by the Dubai Police and the direction of Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai Police Chief,” said Al Muhairi.
“Forensic Entomology is a new branch in forensic investigation. It is the use of the insects and arthropods that are found on decomposing remains to aid legal investigations,” Al Muhairi said. He said the new department will help in the analysing process of the times and causes of death in decomposing bodies.
In a lecture held at the Forensic Sciences and Criminology Department for group of experts, Dr Walid Abdul Gani, general director of Global Experts for Environmental and Agricultural Consultancy and Training, explained the methods and steps that a forensic experts should take during the examination of corpses.
He said the insects should be collected at the crime scene, before the transfer of the body, and that some are collected during the autopsy. He also illustrated the correct procedure of data recording to aid in the process of investigation, presenting an overview of data analysis methods and the importance of forensic entomology in solving crimes.
