For all those who have always dreamed of flying, the chance is at hand.

Inventors, thrill seekers or just anyone with a wish to make their own flying machines can show their prowess at the first Flugtag the German term for Flying Day in Dubai in November.

Sponsored by Red Bull, the event was held in Hyde Park in London in 2003 and attracted 15,000 people.

On November 25, modern day Wright Brother types will participate in the contest at Dubai Creek Park.

Teams of one pilot and four ground crew must launch their manned aircraft off a six-metre platform to see who can fly the longest before plunging into the water below.

The deadline for entry is June 16. Before taking to the skies, teams will have to prove they are the real inventors and produce evidence of an original blueprint for their flying machine. For more information, teams can e-mail flugtag.uae@ae.redbull.com or call 050-256-4141.

Successful inventors will be notified by July 7. They then have three months to build their aircraft.

Winners are scored on time in the air and distance covered. No engines are allowed.

History
The first Flugtag took place in 1992

Flugtag is the brainchild of Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz. The flying event takes place every two years at different locations around the world.

In 1903, the Wright brothers' first flight in a fully controllable aircraft capable of sustaining itself lasted 12 seconds.
