The government of Egypt is planning to set up a new heavy industrial zone at Mersa Matruh, capital of the Matruh Governorate, with investment cost estimated at around USD 1 billion, an official source told Zawya.

"The project aims at setting up an industrial zone with big investments and heavy labor [force] to the south of Dhab'ah, which is accessible through a network of roads," said Eng. Mohammad Atef, director of investments sector at the Marsa Matruh governorate.

The project will be built on a land area of around 385.35 acres (440,000 faddan).

Atef expects the project to be submitted for tendering through the developers' bidding system by the beginning of 2015.

Matruh, one of the biggest governorates in Egypt, has a total land area of 166,563 square kilometers and a population of 241,000 people. It consists of eight centers, eight cities, 56 village units, 249 estates and hamlets.

Prior to the implementation of local governance in Egypt, the Matruh Governorate was known as the Western Desert Governorate.
