A movie that shook the Egyptian community, After The Battle, premiered Friday night at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival (ADFF) where the stars addressed the film’s core issues based on the 2011 revolution.

“[It] is an honest film that shows what truly happened during the time when people were revolting. The movie will affect your emotions, and will make your mind think,” said Egyptian star Ilham Shahin.

The film revolves around Mahmoud (Bassem Samra) who works for the Egyptian Government believing that a stable regime will allow his family a safer life. He enters Tahrir square amid protests where he is beaten after falling off his horse. He then loses his job, and becomes an infamous member of his community and spends his days trying to make ends meet.

Mahmoud later meets Reem (Menna Shalaby), a wealthy, well-educated activist, taking viewers down the road where two worlds collide.

Commenting on Emirati cinema, the film’s star and Lebanese actress Carmen Lebbos told tabloid! she hopes to soon do a film in the UAE. “[The industry] has transitioned towards great quality and the UAE is a country of great history and culture,” she said.

Kuwaiti actor Dawood Hussain, who also stars in the film, said he is working on an ‘Emirati film of international standards, featuring both local and Arab artists.’

“The ADFF allows the world to see stars when they are just like new born children, recent and fresh while still growing. In a short time the Festival became internationally renowned and not just in the Gulf or the Middle East,” Hussain said.

*After the Battle will be screened again on October 15, 4pm at Marina Mall Vox 5.
