KUWAIT: As Kuwait develops, road re-construction will be one of the main infrastructural tasks that the country undertakes. The Jahra road is one of the main roads that connect Kuwait, especially since it is situated downtown. The Ministry of Public Works(MPW) announced the launch of Jahra Road Development Project yesterday during a press conference held at the Movenpick Al-Bidaa yesterday.

The project addresses the future road and traffic requirements that improves safety levels. The work related to this project began about five months ago, and is expected to finish in September 2015, "The Jahra Development Project is one of Kuwait's largest motorway construction projects to date. In fact, it is one of the largest projects of its type (or largest elevated road projects) in the world," said Hussein Theyab, Assistant Undersecretary of Roads and Motorway Systems, Ministry of Public Works (MPW)
. It announced the launch of Jahra Road Development Project yesterday.

Theyab also provided an overview of the project and discussed the current and future plans of Kuwait's road network, "This project plays an important role in facilitating traffic flow, while servicing urban areas and developing sites. The Jahra Road Development Project is one of the most important projects that the MPW implements as part of their ongoing efforts to improve the state's motorway network. Through this project, we aim to minimize current traffic congestions in order to address traffic needs in
the future. We also aim to improve road safety standards," he said.

The project will help fulfill many objectives, "The main objectives of the project are: (1) segregate between bypass traffic and local traffic flow (2) increase the Jahra Road capacity (3), to meet future traffic demands (4) improve road facilities and services (5) improve road safety standards," explained Abdullateef Shamsah, engineer in charge of overseeing the project.

Shamsah also discussed the technical, managerial and financial aspects of the newly launched project. During his presentation, Shamsah explained that the project location will extend from The Jahra Gate (Jahra Roundabout - Sheraton) to the United Nations Roundabout. The expected time frame of completion is within five years and the total project cost is KD 264.76 million.

Based on the contractual agreement signed between the MPW as the project owner and developer, the Jahra Road Development Project includes building, construction and maintenance of roads, elevated motorways and all major utility services (sewage system, storm water drainage, electrical lines AC and DC, telephone lines.)" added Shamsah.

He added, "One of the primary highlights of the project is the development of a 21 kilometer motorway, a one kilometer long tunnel, in addition to an elevated seven kilometer motorway on viaducts, which consists of almost 8,500 precast segments to cover a total area of 38,000 cubic meters.

Shamsah also presented the companies and consultants that are participating in the project; Louis Berger Group in collaboration with the Pan Arab Consulting Engineers as the project design and supervision consultants and the Arab Contractors Company (ACC). Othman Ahmed Othman will be its project contractor.

We are always keen on collaborating with global and regional entities for the added value they bring to our local experts, their technical know-how and expertise, in addition to their professional work ethic, international standards which contribute toward executing our project efficiently," he added.

At the conference, Shamsah also provided an overview of the project's website that will be launched soon, "All Jahra road users will be able to find the latest news and development related to the project through the online web portal: www.jahraroad.com. The website will be available online in the next couple of the weeks.

It will provide all the relevant information, data, facts and figures related to the project in addition to published news releases and statements for media representatives and journalists. It will contain schedule updates which will highlight dates of future press conferences and briefing sessions, and will also have live online streaming services which will allow users, along with leaders at the MPW to keep up to date with project developments in real time," he pointed out.
