In Collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation

Abu Dhabi, UAE - The Emirates Diplomatic Academy (EDA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC), hosted an interactive discussion by Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on ‘Effective Diplomacy in Humanitarian Action’.

Addressing an audience of diplomats, alongside students, faculty and staff of the Academy, Peter Maurer shared insights and thoughts from his affluent career as a Swiss diplomat and humanitarian advocate spanning three decades, on the importance of humanitarian principles and actions, and their correlation to diplomacy. Drawing on his experience, Maurer highlighted his most significant takeaways from serving humanity and representing his country in international fora.

Maurer stated "Beyond the provision of humanitarian assistance, ICRC seeks to work with all actors, including governments to highlight the importance of principled humanitarian action and the implementation of international humanitarian law. We are pleased to participate in this discussion at EDA, emphasising yet again how humanitarian action and diplomacy should go hand in hand. "

Identifying some of the global challenges diplomats face in addressing humanitarian issues in diverse scenarios, Maurer also elaborated on the strategies they should follow to successfully facilitate humanitarian action and achieve the foreign policy goals of their country.

In this context, Maurer recognised the UAE’s global status in advancing diplomatic and humanitarian action and philanthropy.

Speaking on the interactive session, His Excellency Bernardino León, Director General of EDA, said: “It is an honour for EDA to host such a prominent diplomat and humanitarian. This enriching session presented our future diplomats with valuable insights into the challenges involved in implementing humanitarian action across the world and explained the practical connection between diplomatic and humanitarian effort. “

“We are confident that through hosting similar sessions, we can significantly enhance 21stcentury diplomacy and prepare our students to effectively manage potential challenges in their own careers.”

The interactive discussion is the latest in EDA’s series of presentations that invites high-profile diplomatic leaders and practitioners from across the world to share insights from their lives and careers with the Academy’s students with the aim of preparing the UAE’s future diplomats to face a wide range of regional and global challenges.
