Dubai: A carbon emission calculator that allows you to calculate the amount of environmental pollution caused by your vehicles exhaust is amongst a host of new services that have been made available online by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), officials announced yesterday.

The application allows motorists to make calculations by entering information such as the make of the vehicle and the model and comparing results with the international average.

The tool has been made available to encourage Dubai residents to contribute towards conservation of the environment, Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of RTA, said in a statement.

Enquiring about the credit balance available on your unified fare card (Nol card) has also become easier, as it is can now be done online, in addition to calculating Metro fares between various stations. Other new online services allow for status enquiries after replacing driving licences issued from other countries. Enquiries can also be made about whether or not vehicles need technical testing for renewing their registration by providing registration numbers or chassis numbers.

Other services allow for enquiries regarding payment of fines imposed on companies, and fine payment through the traffic folder, number plate, offence reference number or driving licence number, Al Tayer said.

He said the new services are aimed at helping people complete transactions without having to visit customer service centres, which in turn will ease the pressure on the centres and cut down the number of calls made to the call centres, he said.

The number of transactions processed online has increased from 281,000 transactions in 2008 to about 475,000 transactions in 2011, Al Tayer said.

While 926,000 hits were received by the RTA website (www.rta.ae) in 2009, the number jumped to 5.336 million hits last year.
