KUWAIT: The Ministry of Public Works (MPW) has been able to carry out a number of major projects due to the unstinting support of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah, said minister Dr. Fadhil Safar on Friday. Speaking in an interview broadcast on Al-Rai TV, Dr. Safar said that the steps taken by the ministry in accordance with HH the Amir's vision for turning Kuwait into an international economic center had taken practical action to turn this vision into reality. Each of the
projects currently underway in Kuwait proves that a new culture of patriotism and determination is at work in the country, the minister asserted.

Dr. Safar praised the premier's continuous, unlimited support for the development plan, which he said had enabled the minister to achieve several mega projects, including the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port, Jaber Hospital and the new airport building, as well as being well advanced in preparations for others such as the Jaber Bridge and Hareer City. "All these projects can again make Kuwait the pearl of the Gulf," the minister asserted.

He was also keen to emphasize the MPW's commitment to the concept of transparency in all its dealings and in carrying out all the projects, adding that this would be ensured through its close cooperation with various supervisory bodies including the Audit Bureau and the Civil Service Commission.

He further indicated that, in comparison to the monies being spent on similar major projects being carried out in other states, the ministry had managed to keep costs to a minimum. "The Jahra Road project is similar to projects being carried out in Dubai and Hong Kong, but at a lower price," the minister indicated.

Dr. Safar assured the Kuwaiti viewers that the country is set for a great and even revolutionary era, which will see major positive changes in the health sector starting with the inauguration of the Jaber Hospital, the largest hospital in the Middle East to date, to be followed by the opening of eight other new hospitals in the country.

In another development,Kuwait Municipality officials investigating a number of court cases that have cost the municipality large amounts of money have reportedly uncovered a number of misdemeanors perpetrated by senior municipality officials, who may end up facing prosecution, according to one insider.

There is an administrative failure to follow up the cases and deal with the judiciary," a municipal official said, adding that the municipality has lost large amounts of money due to the failures of senior officials in preparing the necessary legal documentation and in attending court sessions.

The official said that as a result of the investigation's findings, municipality minister Dr. Fadhil Safar is considering introducing major changes to the municipality's legal department, adding that some of those involved may face prosecution within the next three months.
