Doha - Honeywell yesterday announced a $9.1m agreement to provide control valves for the new integrated Pearl Gas to Liquids (GTL) plant in Qatar, a partnership between Qatar Shell GTL Ltd. (Shell and Qatar Petroleum). The project's main engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co (HDEC) selected Honeywell for its ability to serve as the single supplier of the plant's general purpose, rotary and severe application valves.

"Many vendors only manufacture certain types of control valves, but Honeywell was the logical choice because of its comprehensive offering. It can supply all three valves, which makes the project implementation much more efficient," said H S Joo, C & I Manager for Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co, Ltd. "Additionally, Honeywell has a proven track record of turning projects quickly, which is a critical factor for a project of this magnitude."

Located about 53 miles north of Doha in the industrial city of Ras Laffan, the Pearl GTL facility will include two gas platforms and an onshore GTL plant that is expected to produce 140,000 barrels per day of GTL products, including naphtha and transport fuels. GTL products are considered environmentally friendly because they are virtually free of sulphur, nitrogen and aromatics.

"Pearl GTL will be a high-profile operation for Shell and an economic asset to Qatar, so HDEC must adhere to a tight project schedule to ensure maximum production," said Simon Park, Regional General Manager for Honeywell Process Solutions, Korea. "Having a single source provide controls to control valves for the implementation can significantly streamline the process and help contractors like HDEC meet aggressive schedules."

Within the past two years, Honeywell also was chosen to provide Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) services, as well as the process automation and control systems for the Pearl GTL facility. Honeywell solutions for GTL plants help improve process profitability and achieve enterprise-wide integration. This allows customers to dynamically integrate corporate priorities and changing business conditions into their gas-plant decision making and production schedules.
