BP's Statistical Review of World Energy is widely considered an industry benchmark, chronicling the state of the energy industry. While the Middle East continues to rule the fossil fuel markets, there are some great emerging trends which highlight the rapid changes in the global energy industry.

1. Saudi Arabia beat Russia to clock the highest output in the world in 2011, with more than 11.16 million bpd. The Kingdom's output rose 12.7% last year, no mean given its already high production.
