Iraq's holy city of Najaf has signed a contract with a local contractor to build a steel plant with a capacity of 300,000 tonnes per year.

The Holy Shrine of Imam Hussein, the religious council in the southern city, signed the deal with a "specialized" company on Tuesday, Al-Forat News said.

The project, to be completed within two years, is located in the heavy industries zone, around 45 km west of the city centre, it said.

"The plant would have an annual capacity of 300,000 tonnes and will provide between 400 and 450 jobs," said Fadil Muhaidden, manager of Iceberg Centromeres Company, which belongs to the Shrine of Imam Hussein.

He did not identify the contractor or mention project costs.
