During the peak of the global Covid-19 pandemic, Cummins Qatar won a major data centre expansion project in Umm Qarn in Qatar, considered one of the top developing countries in the GCC (Gulf Corporation Council). Due to the 2022 FIFA Soccer World Cup, Qatar is ideally positioned to serve as a hub for data centre business growth.

Many reasons led to Cummins Qatar being awarded this project, including the global client having had extensive experience with the Cummins brand. The quick lead time secured Cummins Qatar as one of the main pillars in their expansion policy.

This project celebrated many firsts, such as the introduction of the C2750D5B diesel genset. It was also the first time that Cummins Qatar had built 2 x 45 FT enclosures (36 tons in total), with a sound level of 80 dBA @ 1 m. This was the first time a firefighting system using pressurised nitrogen (clean agent) was used. Additional features included a double cabinet, a 4 000 A ACB panel and fire-rated motorised dampers with weatherproof enclosures.

The Cummins Qatar team obtained technical approval on the design and then proceeded with the commercial aspects, being able to meet a four-month lead time instead of the usual six months. Due to the Covid-19 lockdown, the team conducted the first successful online virtual Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) in the UK, overseen by client representatives and the contractor. The client and consultant have both subsequently conducted a final site inspection of the completed project.

“This was not only a major success story for Cummins Qatar in Q3 2020, but a testament to our flexibility in being able to cater for specific customer requirements, in addition ensuring a quick turnaround time, support, innovative solutions and back-up,” comments Emad Lotfy, General Manager, Cummins Qatar LLC.

Cummins is a top global provider of back-up power solutions for the data centre industry, with the largest dedicated support network coverage in the world. It trains global teams of data centre support specialists as part of an expert network that can fine-tune Cummins’ systems to ensure that clients’ data centres are Always On.
