“The world is changing and as we gather here in this Forum, we should take on the responsibility for finding answers to the most pressing ESG challenges of our time to foster a better future for generations to come,” stated the Chairman of Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba)’s Board of Directors, Shaikh Daij bin Salman bin Daij Al Khalifa, while addressing the participants of the 26th Arab German Business Forum that was held from 05 – 07 June 2023 at The Ritz-Carlton, Berlin, Germany.

Shaikh Daij bin Salman bin Daij Al Khalifa delivered his speech during the Forum’s Gala Dinner held on 06 June 2023, and added: “a sustainable and decarbonised world is one of intersections – between the environment and societies, technology and innovation, collaboration and action. As we are facing similar challenges all around the world, I take the opportunity to call for action so we advance together to meet our national targets in order to achieve the right balance between our economic gains and social returns.”

Several ongoing initiatives which Alba has embarked on to reduce its carbon footprint and support the Kingdom’s ‘Net Zero Emissions by 2060’ objectives under the leadership of HRH Prince Salman Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, were highlighted by Alba’s Chairman of the Board of Directors in his speech – including Power Station 5 Block 4 Project and Solar Farm Projects which will further lower Alba’s GHG intensity levels in addition to the Company’s commitment to planting 6,000 trees per year and support towards restoration of mangrove forests in Bahrain.

Alba’s delegation in the Forum comprised also Chief Executive Officer, Ali Al Baqali, who was featured in the Panel discussion on “Sustainability as a Success Factor & Global Challenge: How to maintain Sustainable Growth in Economies?” alongside other business leaders and experts, which was held on 07 June 2023.

Alba Power Station 5 Block 4 Expansion Project

Alba Power Station 5 (PS5) Block 4 is a Combined Cycle Power Plant that is an expansion of the existing PS5.

PS5 Block 4 Project is the addition of a fourth Block of similar 1:1:1 configuration with J-class gas turbine technology and with minimum nominal ISO rating of a 680.9 MW and includes tie into the existing 220kV Substation. The efficiency of this combined cycle power plant is much higher than the combined cycle power plants of PS3 and PS4. On completion of PS5 Block 4 Expansion Project, the nameplate capacity of PS5 will increase from 1,800 MW to 2,481 MW.

Mitsubishi Power & SEPCOIII consortium will be responsible to design, engineer, procure, construct and commission Block 4. PS5 Block 4 commercial operations are expected to begin in Q4 2024.
