As time goes by, the only way to keep up with change is to change with it. While traditional methods have been taken over by today’s digital age, the advantages digital methods pose play a major role in its increasing popularity. The same trend has now come to the coveted IELTS tests, with the official opening of IDP Education’s new computer delivered IELTS test centre in Dubai.
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS), the world’s most popular high stakes English Language test, is quite frequently taken in Dubai for academic purposes, work or even while moving abroad. The test consists of various elements that test the candidate’s proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking, some of which are done written and others in face to face conversations. While the traditional method includes writing the exam by hand, whether it is Listening, Reading or Writing, IDP Education's new centre now offers candidates the option to take these tests on a computer, a move that has received overwhelmingly positive feedback.
The new method received some interesting feedback: participants feel that it is now more convenient to take the test, as well as calling out that it allows for simple and clean editing. Some even said that since typing is now an option, it takes away the stress of hand writing tasks, while worrying about neat handwriting. Roneil Anthony took the test and commented: “I was surprised it was a very comfortable way of taking IELTS. From reducing the strain on your hand from the pencil you hold in the paper-based test, to the way you can edit your writing tasks, it was brilliant!”
On the other hand, switching to the digital methods do enjoy a wide range of benefits for the test centres as well. Since it is computer-delivered, it allows for faster results, and more tests to allow candidates more choice for when they take their test.
Of course, moving digital does have its challenges when it comes to availability, infrastructure, human elements and even security, but, IDP has worked hard to ensure all these bases are covered. With advanced, compact custom-built centres for tests, IDP delivers the test in a secure environment, and a solution that can deliver on the quality assurance measures IELTS is known for. However, the test is not entirely digital, especially since speaking in general life takes place between real people. This is why IDP has ensured that the speaking tests will remain face-to-face with a trained and certified Examiner.
Darrin Vardon, Director, IELTS Operations Middle East & Eastern Europe, IDP Education, said ‘’More people than ever are looking to improve their English to advance their global career opportunities. IDP, a proud co-owner of IELTS, has introduced computer-delivered IELTS at its test centres around the region empowering our ambitious test takers to achieve their academic and global migration goals. The popular computer-delivered IELTS test option offers an improved test day experience, faster results and more test availability for Academic and General Training test takers while maintaining all of the test’s current security, trust and integrity.”
Rashi Bhattacharya, Country Director, UAE, Oman and Qatar – IDP Education, said the new test experience in Dubai puts IELTS test takers first by offering them the ability to take IELTS - the world’s most trusted high-stakes English test - on a computer and get their results faster (5 – 7 days). They have the option to sit the IELTS test 3 times a day and up to 7 days a week. Test takers can now type instead of writing by hand!
The contemporary and welcoming space is the second centre in the United Arab Emirates to offer customers the choice of taking their IELTS test on a computer and follows on from the Abu Dhabi launch in September 2018.
