December: Bel Egypt, the owner of La Vache Qui Rit, Kiri, and Abu El Walad, participates in the international food policy research institute (IFPRI) and UNFAO report launch entitled “Food Policies and their Implications on Overweight and Obesity Trends in Selected Countries in the Near East and North Africa Region”. This participation came as part of their commitment to promoting healthier and responsible food for all worldwide, offering products that combine eating pleasure with nutritional benefits and quality ingredients.
The launch event was attended by Dr Habiba Ali, Associate Professor, Chairperson and Dietetics Program Coordinator, Department of Nutrition and Health, United Arab Emirates, Mr. Serge Nakouzi, Deputy Regional Representative, FAORNE, Dr Johan Swinnen, Director-General, Dr Dongyu QU, Director-General of FAO, President of the National Nutrition Institute in Egypt, Dr Farah Naja, Associated Professor, American University of Beirut, Lebanon, Ms. Fatema AlMulla, Senior Research Analyst, Food and Water Security Office, United Arab Emirates, Dr Ayoub Al-Jawaldeh, Regional Nutrition Advisor, WHO EMRO and Caroline Chesneau Bel Group Nutrition Director.
This high-level event aimed to shed light on the latest trends and distinct patterns of overweight and obesity across the region, with a focus on the role of trade and food policies, including trade regimes and government food subsidies. The participants also addressed their concerns regarding the increasing of obesity epidemic in the region, while also identifying the role of different stakeholders such as policy makers, private sectors, research and academe, farmers’ organizations and international development partners.
From her part, Caroline Chesneau, Bel Group Nutrition Director said, “It is a great honour to participate in this discussion on a topic more relevant than ever especially with the emergence of COVID 19 crisis. Bel Group is established more than 150 years ago, providing healthy snacks through dairy products in more than 130 countries with the iconic brands such as The Laughing Cow and Kiri. We totally believe that we have a role to play to contribute to the UN SDG’s. Our mission is to champion healthier and responsible for all.”
She added, “Regarding healthier food, we are working progressively to improve the nutrition quality of our products, reducing fats salt and sugars, and fortifying our products to help fight against the biggest local deficiencies. For instance, La Vache Qui Rit will be launched soon with iron, zinc, iodine and vitamins. We are also committed to implement nutrition programs in 10 countries by 2025 in cooperation with our local partners: amongst them is Egypt in collaboration with the UNFAO.”
She also pointed out, “Nutrition for Egypt is an important public priority, and the Egyptian government is working relentlessly on creating public awareness. On this occasion, I would like to highlight the importance of collaboration between stakeholders, and praise the Egyptian government for its continuous efforts in promoting a healthy environment for citizens and Bel Group enjoys strong commitment to nutrition which was highlighted by Jean-Marc Faures, FAO Regional Programme Leader.”
It is worth mentioning that Bel Egypt entrenches its global strategy in line with Egypt’s 2030 vision, along with the UN’s SDGs including; zero hunger, gender equality, good health and wellbeing, responsible consumption and production, as well as climate action. Bel Egypt will launch a nutrition program in cooperation with UNFAO in the first quarter of 2021.
