Khatib & Alami (K&A) has been recently awarded an enterprise Geographic Information Systems (GIS) project for the Ministry of Electricity and Water in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The project, which is expected to last for two years, will serve the ministry's desire to modernize, automate and informate its planning, operational, financial and management activities by introducing state-of-the-art operational systems that will enhance its performance and provide quality service to its customers.

The vision for this Enterprise GIS project is to embed the institutional knowledge of MEW water and power network assets into the GIS to support long-term management of these assets.

The implementation of the GIS will facilitate the timely and accurate capture, documentation, and distribution of network asset information to the entire MEW workforce. This will enable MEW to improve customer services, meet competitive challenges, and achieve key performance indicators established by key stakeholders.

The enterprise approach in Business Process Modeling, Database Modeling, and Application Development, adopted by the K&A team, during the project execution is aligned with MEW strategic philosophy of the modern business operations, process design decisions, and system priorities. The MEW Enterprise GIS will allow the utility to focus more on each of the fundamental business dimensions - Who, What, Why, Where, When and How.

K&A has teamed up with the Environmental System Research Institute (ESRI), Miner & Minder (M&M) to propose an enterprise AM.FM/GIS solution. The implementation strategy will be based on the integration of AM/FM departmental functions with other GIS applications & interfaces and other operational systems, such as mobile dispatch, customer service, outage management, and other distribution automation systems as well as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.
