Some 47,000 tons of olive have been produced across the country during the current Iranian year (started March 20), said the head of Olive Development Project.

Alireza Esmaeili also told ISNA that close to 3,200 tons of olive oil have been extracted this year and that about 28,000 tons of canned olive have been produced.

Based on statistics released by Iran's Customs Administration, close to 3,941 tons of olive products have been imported during March 20-Sept. 21.

"It included 3,218 tons of olive oil and 723 tons of canned olive," he said. The main producers of olive in the world are Spain, Italy, Greece, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey and Morocco.

Iran is among the olive-rich countries and by expanding plantation, local needs will be met and grounds will be prepared for export. The provinces of Fars, Kerman, Hormuzgan, Sistan-Baluchestan, Qazvin, Gilan, Golestan and Zanjan are the top olive growing regions of the country.

arom and Gilvan gardens in Zanjan province have the highest acreage under olive cultivation while the lowest is Roudbar in Gilan province. Per capita consumption of olive stands at 160 grams annually.

Olives above five grams are used for canning and olives below three grams for extracting oil. Olives between three to five grams are used for both purposes.
