Abu Dhabi: The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) participated in the 28th edition of the New Delhi World Book Fair in India alongside publishers and writers from around the world.

DCT Abu Dhabi attended the Fair, which concluded recently, as part of a promotional campaign for Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) to attract publishers and enhance links with specialists in the industry.

The participation followed India’s success as the Guest of Honour at ADIBF in 2019, which saw several events and lectures about Indian publishing, as well dozens of Indian writers and publishers taking part in ADIBF’s Cultural Programme.

The DCT Abu Dhabi pavilion at New Delhi World Book Fair hosted a series of meetings with Indian publishers and industry specialists, providing details about the 2020 edition of ADIBF, which takes place from 15 - 21 April 2020.

The pavilion showcased the opportunities ADIBF provides for publishers as a professional platform that brings together publishers and promotes the exchange of expertise. It also highlighted Abu Dhabi’s role as an international cultural hub and the UAE’s initiatives to support culture and promote reading as a daily habit.

The DCT Abu Dhabi delegation met HE Ramesh Mittal, Chairman of CAPEXIL, a council set up by the Indian Ministry of Commerce & Industry to encourage Indian publishers to participate in international book fairs. The parties discussed various avenues of collaboration, presenting numerous ideas for collaborative projects.

The delegation also met with Prof. Govind Sharma, Chairman of the National Book Trust, India, the body responsible for organising the New Delhi World Book Fair, to discuss collaboration plans with ADIBF.

DCT Abu Dhabi’s pavilion attracted a large number of publishers and visitors seeking information about Abu Dhabi and ADIBF, and showcased a collection of the Department’s publications and promotional materials about the emirate.

“We are very pleased that ADIBF continues to see an increase in interest from publishers in India and other Asian countries, who are realising the wealth of opportunities available for them in the UAE and the Arab World,” said Abdulla Majed Al Ali, Acting Executive Director of the National Library Sector at DCT Abu Dhabi and Director of ADIBF.

“We are finding that more and more publishers are keen to sell their copyrights and translate their works into Arabic, which DCT Abu Dhabi’s ‘Spotlight on Rights’ initiative supports by exchanging book rights for a subsidy, with the ultimate goal of enriching the Arabic library with new content.

“Over the past years, more than 1,000 subsidies were granted to publishers as part of the initiative, working side by side with DCT Abu Dhabi’s Kalima translation project, which now has produced over 830 titles covering all fields of knowledge. In fact, Kalima has seen translations into at least 13 different languages, while many of DCT Abu Dhabi’s publications have become popular with Indian researchers and intellectuals after they were translated into Indian languages.”

DCT Abu Dhabi’s participation at the New Delhi World Book Fair culminated with many publishers registering for attendance at the upcoming edition of ADIBF, which this year will see Russia as its Guest of Honour.

ADIBF continues to grow in international stature with publishers from 76 countries attending in 2019, where they were able to display their publications in a professional, interactive setting.
