Cairo : Tetra Pak Egypt, world’s leading food processing and packaging solutions company, Chamber of Food Industries and Egyptian Paediatric Association organized a round table to raise awareness about the benefits of safe packed milk and the hazards of consuming loose milk.

The safe milk campaign aims to increase the number of consumers who use safe packed milk, which goes with Tetra Pak’s mission to “Make food safe and available, everywhere”. In Egypt, the average consumption of milk is around 10 liters for each person on annual basis, in comparison to 37 liters in Middle East and Africa, and 39 liters around the world.

It is worth mentioning that, the percentage of Egyptians who converted to the usage of safe packed milk reached 50.8% in 2019.

During the round table discussions, Dr. Reda Abdel Galil, Senior Food Safety & Regulatory affairs at the Chamber of Food Industries said that, “Ultra-high temperature treatment (UHT) is a technology where milk gets heated to 135-140 Degrees Celsius for 4 seconds then it is cooled immediately which destroys bacteria without affecting the nutritional value of the milk. This process takes place in a closed sterile environment which prevents contamination.”

Dr. Abdel Galil added “as a matter of fact, there are several hazards in consuming loose milk. It is exposed to sun, light and air which makes it likely to contain harmful bacteria and, in some cases, additives are added to prolong its life.”

Khaled El Ebrashy, Marketing Director of Tetra Pak Egypt, added, “After UHT treatment, milk is immediately put into our sterile six-layer cartons. This process avoids any re-infection without the need to use preservatives. The ‘6-Layer’ concept, is a packaging method that is a signature of Tetra Pak as it creates a barrier against light and oxygen.”

El Ebrashy also mentioned that, “There is no need for refrigeration before opening the package and that boiling loose milk at home does not make it safe because the temperature at which it is boiled is not high enough to destroy all bacteria and microorganisms.”

Dr. Cherif Abdel Aal, General Secretary of the board of the Egyptian Paediatric Association, stated,” UHT milk contains nutritional elements such as calcium and vitamin D that help bone and teeth strength. It is also composed of a great amount of water molecules that ensure rehydration”

Tetra Pak is carrying out a campaign on social and digital media to raise awareness regarding the benefits of safe packed milk. The campaign aims to reach around 8 million people. It is worth mentioning that, the company in partnership with CFI and EPA have been arranging several educational campaigns along the years in which different tools and mediums were used, such as doctors’ seminars, TV adverts, outdoor campaign, roadshows.
