Saudi Arabia announced on Monday it would build 16 5-star hotels, an airport, two resorts and other facilities within its mega Red Sea Development project.

The hotels will initially comprise 3,000 rooms while there will be a civilian airport, two land resorts, 11 sea resorts, a marina, green hills, floating villas, restaurants and amusement facilities, the Red Sea Development Company, the projects developer, announced via Twitter.

"The project is expected to start receiving visitors and tourists at the end of 2022...when all facilities are completed in 2030, they will provide 8,000 hotel rooms, most of which will be built on man-made islands," it added.

The project, located on the Western Red Sea flank of the Gulf Kingdom, was announced by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2017 as part of his ambitious Vision 2030 which aims to diversity the oil-reliant economy.

Officials have said the project could attract at least one million tourists every year and would contribute nearly $6 billion to GDP.
