Dubai: The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) will be hosting, from July 14 – 18, a regional workshop on “Training the Health Professionals to Develop a Regional Program on the Radiation Protection (RP) in the Interventional Radiology (IR) Field”.

The workshop will be held at Fairmont Dubai, with the participation of 35 trainees from the UAE, Vietnam, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Mongolia and Philippine.

Speakers from MoHAP, Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), International Atomic Energy Agency and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) will also take part in the workshop.

In this regard, H.E. Dr. Hussein Abdel Rahman Al-Rand, Undersecretary of the Ministry’s Health Assistant Sector, Health Centers and Clinics, emphasized MoHAP’s keenness on developing occupational health and radiation protection fields, through the introduction of the latest technologies and training programs that would help develop the awareness of those engaged in these fields about their international criteria.

This comes as part of MoHAP’s strategy aiming to provide comprehensive and integrated healthcare services in innovative and sustainable ways to ensure the prevention of society from diseases.

Enhancing Preventive Programs

Al Rand pointed out that MoHAP’s preventive medicine system pays great attention to the preventive protocols for the protection from the radiation used in the diagnostic and therapeutic medical domains, due to its hazards on the health of those working in radiation fields.

“For that reason, this training program has been developed to cover all uses of radiation in accordance with the standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency,” he added.

Maryam Al-Hajri, Director of the National Radiation Protection Centre, said: “The workshop aims at raising the standards of patient and radiation safety in the Interventional Radiology field, which includes high doses of radiation. Our aim is to provide education and strengthen the knowledge of radiation protection protocols. This information could be obtained through the experts participating in this workshop and the training skills for the national cadres to create a sustainable training program.”

Interventional Radiology: The Surgery of the 21st Century

The Interventional Radiology is seen as the surgery of the 21st century. It’s performed by using X-ray or CT scans under local anesthesia, by inserting tiny instruments and thin plastic tubes (catheters) into the body via an artery or vein.

Interventional radiologists perform a broad range of procedures such as using a wide variety of essential drugs, opening or dilating a blocked artery or even treating tumors and taking organ biopsies.

The Interventional radiology is a low-risk and low-infection procedure with tolerable pain. In addition, the recovery time using the interventional radiology is less than the recovery time in open surgeries. In high-risk cases, the interventional radiology is predominantly the safe alternative rather than traditional surgeries.

The studies highlight the importance of cooperation between interventional radiologists, medical physics specialists and other doctors. That’s because the interventional radiology helps in treating a variety of diseases, including kidney and heart diseases, reproductive problems and various types of cancer. Therefore, there’s an urgent need to coordinate between various medical workgroups to implement the radiation safety standards and scale back the radiation doses for both health workers and patients.
