A massive renovation project aims to restore Muharraq’s historic Casino Garden to its former glory.

The park which opened in the late 60s is one of Muharraq’s cultural landmarks. However, many of the garden’s amenities are now either out of order or in a state of disrepair.

The Muharraq Municipal Council has submitted a proposal to restore the park to its former glory and bring back all games and rides that attracted hundreds of families every evening.

OLDEST

“Casino Garden is the oldest park in Muharraq and we want to give it a facelift while preserving its traditional features,” said council vice-chairman Hassan Al Doy.

“The park had rides like small boats and bumper cars; bringing those back is part of our proposal to the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry.

“The ministry still hasn’t approved a budget for 2021-2022, but we estimate an expenditure of BD300,000 to BD400,000 for renovation.”

Mr Al Doy said there are plans to add a football field and a volleyball court, as well as a plant nursery and restaurant.

“A part of the park could be open to investors who can add more variety and entertainment options,” he said.

“We are planning to expand the parking area by removing the pavement, which will allow for nearly 50 new parking spaces.”

The council has also set up a walkway within the park with floor plan, signboards and exercise machines.

Mr Al Doy said the second walkway located in Block 221 should be ready by Sports Day on February 9.

“This walkway overlooks the lively Al Ghous Street, specifically the new area overlooking King Hamad Hospital and the Rotana Hotel, and the street will be expanded to three lanes in each direction.

“The walkway on Block 221 also includes exercise machines, benches, plants and a football field furnished with synthetic grass,” he said.

This is in addition to plant nurseries that aim to motivate people to cultivate greenery in the area by volunteering their time and effort.

Volunteers have distributed more than 4,500 different seedlings over a year and a half, according to Mr Al Doy.
