Doha:– The Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII), part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), has opened registration for its 10th Annual International Translation Conference, to be held from March 26 to 27 at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC).

This year’s conference will explore the theme of Translation Beyond the Margins, and will feature presentations by leading experts and practitioners in the fields of translation, interpreting, media, literature and journalism.

Dr. Amal Al-Malki, founding dean of CHSS, who will deliver the opening address at the event, said: “This year marks the tenth consecutive year that TII has hosted its conference; one that attracts academics, researchers, and practitioners across numerous branches of translation studies.

“Our ambition over the last decade has been to expand awareness of the scholarship, learning, and research, which is driving the increasing sophistication of translation services and improving how we communicate.

“We invite those with an interest in translation studies to register to attend the event, and they can look forward to an enriching and rewarding experience that will offer insights into the current developments in the field, and how individuals, organizations and countries are implementing these advancements as they specifically pertain to their translation requirements.” 

The 10th TII conference will welcome over 40 speakers from more than 16 countries, including Belgium, Spain, United Kingdom, United States, France, Brazil, Poland, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Canada, Algeria, Morocco, South Korea, South Africa and Slovakia.

Mr. Rytis Martikonis, director-general for translation at the European Commission, is set to deliver a talk on the topic of Multilingualism in Europe: universities, professional training, and the civil service during the Sparking the Discussion opening panel, to be chaired by Dr. Joselia Neves, a professor at TII.

Throughout the two-day event, attendees will participate in number of panel discussions and workshops to explore a range of topics on translation, including crossovers in interpreting, audiovisual translation, transcreation and self-translation; innovation and transgression in researching translation and related areas; translator training beyond the classroom; translation norms and transgressions; translation for active citizenship; and translation beyond the word.

TII is committed to advancing research in the various fields of translation studies. The institute hosts a wide range of international events to advance knowledge in translation, interpreting and foreign languages.
