Dubai: Burjuman Metro Station has won the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) inaugural quarterly safety award in recognition of its high safety standards.

The award will be presented to the best metro station every quarter. Stations will be evaluated on two parameters: Least number of accidents and the station team’s efforts in creating a culture of safety.

In the first six months of 2015, the number of Metro passengers on both the Red and Green Lines exceeded 88.2 million compared with 81.4 million during the same period last year, according to the RTA.

Burjuman Station alone served 3.5 million passengers in this period.

Abdullah Yousuf Al Ali, CEO of RTA’s Rail Agency, said the Rail Safety Committee looked into areas such as use of escalators, lift doors, or wet floors. In the last quarter, no accidents were reported in these areas.

The committee comprises members from metro operator Serco company and several members from the Rail Agency and the RTA.

Al Ali said: “The Rail Agency seeks to foster a culture of safety to minimise the rate of accidents in metro stations in line with RTA’s vision of providing Safe and Smooth Transport for All.”
