Ajman, UAE: Continuing to celebrate the success, determination and hard work of Alumni front liners, Gulf Medical University hosted ‘GMU Global Alumni Summit’ on Saturday 20th November at Ajman Bahi Palace Hotel, Ajman. On the occasion, 24 awards were bestowed upon selected Alumni for their outstanding contributions in healthcare sector across the globe under the three broad categories of Leadership, Research and Community Service. Among the awardees were the eminent personalities from different fields such as Nuero Surgery, COVID & Infectious diseases, Sports Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Medical education and Pediatric Surgery working in various leadership positions in USA, UK, Ireland, UAE, India, Kenya, and Saudi Arabia.

GMU Alumni comprises of over 2500 health professions graduates from 90 nationalities with 11% of them being UAE nationals. From consultant physicians in public hospitals to successful private practitioners, being employed as faculty in reputed universities including GMU to being avid researchers and entrepreneurs, COO’s to CEO’s of healthcare establishments, many have successfully left their footprint across the globe. Among them are a number of Emirati medical practitioners who have made a mark in many UAE hospitals, helping the country advance towards its healthcare goals. Many nationals are occupying important positions in the Ministry capable of influencing policy decisions in the country. About 40 GMU graduates are currently employed within the Thumbay Group and 136 are undergoing internship in our own MOH-approved healthcare facilities. 

Dr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President and Chairman of Board of Governors, GMU, who was the Chief Guest at the Summit, felicitated the winners. Speaking on the occasion he said, “Our Alumni are our best ambassadors and we always pray for their success. We assure our support in all their future endeavours.”

GMU’s alumni now has 60% females and 40% male graduates, with UAE nationals constituting 11% of the alumni, GCC nationals 7%, other Arabs 14%, Asians 44%, Africans 16% and other nationals 10%.

Inspiring the Alumni with his message, Prof. Hossam Hamdy, Chancellor GMU, said, “You are the reflection of GMU’s past, representation of its present and the link to its future. You have shown that it is also important for everyone to set goals for themselves and be a lifelong learner to reach the top and fulfill their dreams. You have made us proud and helped us realize the vision of this University. The past one year has been tumultuous one but our Alumni world over has risen up to the occasion fulfilling their duties and serving their nation and world across.”

Prof. Hossam Hamdy also outlined the significant achievements of the University in recent times. The Chancellor announced several benefits for the alumni, including scholarships for post-graduate programs, adjunct faculty positions at GMU, employment opportunities and full access to GMU’s e-library learning resources.

GMU maintains contact and positive relations with its alumni.  Whether students have recently graduated, or graduated some time the Institution is always interested in their accomplishments, and where their paths have taken them. GMU Alumni Society was established to promote and support activities that connect alumni to each other, connect alumni to the school, and connect students and alumni. Alumni Chapters were established in US, UK, Canada, Germany and Australia, also for the above purpose

Award winner in the category of National Leadership and Community Engagement Dr. Noorah, Al Shimmari, Director Laiq Medical Services, said, “Our Alumni network at GMU University is very strong and we are grateful that our University completely supports us even after our graduation. In the community service category the award was won by Dr. Jabir Ibrahim Jibril, Medical Officer at Guards Battalion Medical reception Station. Dr. Jabir, who has a Master’s Degree in Infectious diseases, organises an annual medical charity campaign that treats over a thousand people. “My aim is to give back to the society by eradicating infectious diseases in Sub Saharan African region. Working as a COVID frontline worker, I have put all my learnings at GMU in practice. These summits and recognition help us build a deep sense of belonging towards our institution and enable us to contribute towards the growth of our Alma matter.”
