Facility to offer specialist services and technology within the Medcare Women and Children’s Hospital

Dubai, UAE: Medcare today announced the opening of the first DHA accredited Fetal Medicine Unit in the UAE. Situated in the heart of the Women and Children Hospital on Sheikh Zayed road, the facility is equipped and dedicated to serving the pregnant population of the UAE.

The new facility will offer a wide range of fetal therapies, including management of high risk pregnancies, multiple pregnancies, counselling, and invasive procedures. Specialist services including Utero Fetal Transfusion and Laser Treatment for Twin Transfusion Syndrome will be available at the facility, for the first time in the UAE.

Ms Alisha Moopen, Executive Director and CEO of Hospitals and Clinics, GCC, at Aster DM Healthcare said, “I am delighted to announce the opening of the Medcare Fetal Medicine Facility. With our commitment to providing the best healthcare services to society, we have both diversified and fortified our portfolio to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the UAE. This clinic, situated within our well-established Medcare Women and Children Hospital, is a perfect example of this commitment.”

Dr. Shamsa Bin Hammad, Chief Operation Officer of Medcare Women & Children hospital commented on the launch, “With such a diverse population in the UAE, and a baby born every 6 seconds[1], a specialist facility that meets the needs of this diverse patient base is a must. As a mother, I know how exciting the pregnancy journey can be, but as a Doctor, I am acutely aware of the risks as well. Each pregnancy is unique, and our team of specialists are highly trained to offer the best care possible. Our aim is: ‘to spot issues as early as 12 weeks’, so that we can plan the safe management of the rest of the pregnancy. We are committed to take care of High Risk Pregnancies”

The facility will help detect and diagnose problems in the baby at the earliest stage. Currently, there are several standard prenatal tests that must be performed at regular intervals. While blood and urine tests are mandatory routine tests that every mother-to-be should have, Medcare recommend undergoing the following to ensure a more informed pregnancy: The Glucose test, to detect gestational diabetes; Chronic Villus Sampling; Amniocentesis (or AFT); Maternal Serum Screening; and the NIPT test. These will help to diagnose any chromosomal abnormalities, generic disorders or fetal infections during different time periods. All of these tests and more are available in the new Medcare Fetal Medicine Facility.
