Dubai: Satish Patwardhan, 48 male, from India was brought to the emergency room of NMC Hospital, DIP with extensive facial injuries and bleeding after a road traffic accident. Satish was traveling in his car while a driver of the other car lost his control and collided with his vehicle. Due to the impact of collision, Satish developed serious injury to entire face, brain, eye, left arm and required immediate medical attention. The Dubai Corporation of Ambulances (DCAS) transferred him to NMC Hospital, DIP emergency department. The emergency department doctors of NMC Hospital, DIP removed foreign bodies from his open wounds, completed investigation and immediately transferred him to the operation theatre.

When asked about the major challenge, Dr. Santosh Kumar Sharma, Consultant Neurosurgeon said, “Satish was bleeding profusely, and we had to stop his bleeding by restraining the broken facial bones so that they do not injure the blood vessels further.”

He was stabilized in ICU and after 3 days, surgery procedures were planned by a comprehensive medical team under Dr. Santosh Kumar Sharma and including Dr. Bhushan Jayade, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Vasu Kumar, Specialist Ophthalmologist, Dr. Carlos Fernandes, Consultant ENT, Dr. Mahesh Varma, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Dr. Vijayant Kadaraju, Specialist Orthopedic and Spine Surgeon as all of them were going to have a crucial role to play in saving the life of the patient.

Satish, the sole bread winner to a family of four, living in the UAE for the last four years, working in a local carpet manufacturing firm, had to undergo series of procedures to manage his condition. Firstly, the tracheostomy was performed, bypassing the obstructed upper airway and providing for a prolonged artificial respiration, by the Consultant ENT while feeding tubes were placed by the Consultant Gastroenterologist. Since the part of brain was out, craniotomy, removing of a section of the skull to access the brain underneath to tackle blood clots and swelling of the brain and dural repair (dura; tough outermost membrane enveloping the brain) was done by the Consultant Neurosurgeon while simultaneously a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon was fixing his cranial, upper face, orbit, cheek bones and lower jaw bones and lastly the eye suturing was performed by a Specialist Ophthalmologist. The last procedure to be performed was to correct a fractured left arm by Specialist Orthopedic and Spine Surgeon. These procedures took close to 12 hours with excellent team work that provided form to his face, brain and removed all the roadside dust, dirt and foreign body elements associated with the accident.

Post surgeries, Satish had to be in ICU for few days. When asked about outcomes of surgeries, Dr. Santosh Kumar Sharma, Consultant Neurosurgeon, commented, “Such severe brain injuries due to accidents can create behavioral problems and memory loss in patients but in Satish’s case we could manage his condition so well that post-surgery he could recognize his family members”.

Satish could talk and sallow food as he stayed at NMC Hospital, DIP for 28 days, upon his discharge with a complete recovery.

Satish was transferred to the hospital’s Emergency room within 30 mins of the accident having taken place owing to the DCAS and NMC Hospital DIP, Dubai entering into an arrangement to look after such road side accident cases. The hospital has saved and looked after about 5000 such patients rescued via the DCAS ambulances with 300 on an average per month. The hospital was recognized at the Partners Award Ceremony held by DCAS in a brief event held in 2017.

Prasanth Manghat, NMC Health CEO and Executive Director said, “Life is fragile and precious and there is no greater glory and satisfaction in nurturing and preserving life. NMC Health is committed to work with the country’s key stakeholders to ensure that quality healthcare, which is a fundamental right of every citizen, is delivered to one all. We are grateful to the DCAS management (Dubai Corporation of Ambulances) for posing their faith in our ability to deliver that”.
