Kuwait: Boursa Kuwait rang the bell to support refugees during World Refugee Day 2021, in collaboration with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. The stock exchange will also light up its building in blue, which are the colors of the UNHCR logo, to raise awareness of the plight of refugees and the forcibly displaced and shed light on the role that the private sector can play to accomplish goal 17 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The compassionate initiative forms part of Boursa Kuwait’s efforts to create a lasting meaningful impact on the communities where it operates as part of its Corporate Sustainability strategy.

An international day designated by the United Nations to honor refugees around the globe, World Refugee Day has been commemorated each year on June 20 since 2001. The day celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution, and shines a light on the rights, needs and dreams of refugees, helping to build empathy and understanding for their plight and mobilize resources to enable them to thrive. This year, World Refugee Day is marked under the theme, ‘Together we heal, learn and shine.’

Commenting on the event, Naser M. Al-Sanousi, Director of Marketing and Communication at Boursa Kuwait, said, “The number of refugees and forcibly displaced persons around the world at the end of 2020 has exceeded 80 million, a large percentage of which are under the age of 18, which is a record number, especially in light of this pandemic stricken time. Boursa Kuwait joins UNHCR today, ringing the bell for World Refugee Day in support of every person who has been displaced by wars and conflicts across the world.”

Dr. Samer Haddadin, Representative of the UNHCR Office in Kuwait, also spoke on this occasion, saying: “World Refugee Day recognizes the strength, courage, and resilience of millions of refugees who have been forced to flee often struggle to access the most basic of needs, such as food, shelter, education and medical facilities. We work together with refugees, partners and communities every day to help them access these services and look towards brighter futures.”

Considered to be one of the key contributors to the UNHCR around the world, Kuwait has donated over 430 million dollars to the UN Refugee Agency over the past ten years.

Dr. Haddadin added, “We have often used the example of Kuwait as a role model other countries can emulate, as it has long been a contributor to the UNHCR. I would like to extend my gratitude to the State of Kuwait, its institutions and its people for their support over the years, which has undoubtedly helped improve the lives of millions of refugees around the world.”

Boursa Kuwait’s partnership with the UNHCR to ring the bell on World Refugee Day is the embodiment of the company’s sincere desire to raise awareness to the importance of helping those who are in need and have been deprived of their right to live with dignity. This initiative will contribute to greater awareness of the importance of helping the victims of wars, conflicts and persecution build better futures for themselves, and is in line with Boursa Kuwait’s Corporate Sustainability initiatives among the three pillars of the Environment, Education and Community as well as Goal 17 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.

Boursa Kuwait’s Corporate Sustainability strategy stipulates ensuring initiatives apply and fall in line with the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR), industry best practice standards and investor expectations, creating strong and sustainable partnerships that ultimately achieve success and allow Boursa Kuwait to leverage the capabilities and strengths of other companies or organizations that have experience in different fields, and integrating sustainability efforts with the company culture, in order to achieve longevity and an ongoing impact that is carried on and instilled in the day-to-day operations of the stock exchange.

As part of the strategy, Boursa Kuwait has launched many initiatives in partnership with local and international organizations, focusing on support for nongovernmental organizations and charity programs, financial literacy and capital market awareness, the empowerment of women, environmental protection as well as safety and preventive measures against Covid-19.
