Dubai installed nearly 299 megawatts (MW) of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity at the end of March under the Shams Dubai inititaive, a press statement by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) said.

The net metering programme allows DEWA customers - residential, industrial and commercial - to install grid-connected solar PV systems on their property, utilise the electricity on-site, and export the surplus to the grid to reduce their electricity bills.

"Until 31 March 2021, Shams Dubai has connected over 6,727 buildings with a capacity of 298.7 MW," the press statement said, quoting DEWA MD and CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer.

The statement said DEWA's Hab-Reeh Web Service, a smart interactive platform for self-assessment of PV solar system designs for Shams Dubai, won the UK's Best Business Award in the Best Customer Focus category.

In January 2020, DEWA had said in a statement that it had received applications under Shams Dubai for a total capacity of 523 MW.
