Background

The National Authority for Tunnels planned to develop Cairo to 10th of Ramadan Light Rail System Project, in New Capital, Cairo, Cairo, Egypt. Nile Engineering Consultants was the construction supervision, Khatib & Alami Consultants S.A.E was the design consultant. CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co Ltd was the vehicle supplier. Osman Ahmed Osman & Co, Orascom Construction Industries S.A.E. Concord For Engineering And Contracting Co, The Petroleum Projects & Technical Consultations Co, General Nile Company for Road Construction and JV of China Railway Engineering Corp and AVIC International Holding Corp were costruction contractors. The project covered the construction of 68 KM railway, 11 stations with 340000 passengers per year and 120 km/h speed. The new railway would link the 10th of Ramadan City outside Cairo to the new capital, targeting the new cities of El Salam, El Obour, El Shorouk, Al Mostakbal, Al Roubiki, and the New Administrative Capital. The new railway would start from Adly Mansour exchange station that intersects with the Metro Line 3, crossing all the way through the Cairo-Ismailia desert road to Al Rubiki city. There, it will branch into two parts. One will head North alongside the regional ring road, serving the 10th of Ramadan City, and the other will head south from Al Rubiki station to the New Capital. In the second phase, the line is planned to extend to the Sports City at the intersection of Ain Sukhna road with the regional ring road, making the line’s length 93km. The project would ease local transport pressure and help promote Belt and Road Initiative.
