Government of Mozambique planned to develop Nacala Road Corridor Project in Mozambique. China Jiangxi International Economic & Technical Cooperation Co Ltd was one of the project contractor. The project covered the construction of a 10-meter-width, 1033 km road. The development and upgrading of the Nacala Road Corridor falls within the Southern African Development Community's (SADC) priority projects which have been included in the NEPAD-STAP programme. It comprises a total of 1033km of road works and two one-stop border posts one between Mozambique and Malawi and the other between Malawi and Zambia. The project is to be implemented in three Phases. The first one, subject of this support comprises 361km or 35% of road works in Mozambique and Malawi. It will be focuse on the rehabilitation of the Cuamba-Muita road in the north of the country. Phase II comprises 360km or 34.9% of road works in Zambia and Phase III of 312km or 30.1% of road works in Mozambique and Malawi and two one-stop border posts between Mozambique and Malawi and Malawi and Zambia. All this phases include design review, pre-contract services and supervision of the civil works, road safety, HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness, compensation and resettlement and audit. Nampula to Cuamba Road was part of the project. Lot “A”, with 131 kilometres comprising the section from the city of Nampula to Ribaué, was awarded to the China Henan International Cooperation Group (Chico), Lot “B” of 103 kilometres, covering the Ribaué to Malema section is being recovered by China Communications Construction and Lot “C” of 114 kilometres, comprising the Malema to Cuamba stretch. The project would greatly ease local life and reduce transportation pressure.
