Ongoing

Background

China Ocean Shipping Co Ltd through Piraeus Port Authority S.A. (PPA) planned to develop the Port of Piraeus Expansion Project in Piraeus, Greece. The project was planned to expand and upgrade the existing Piraeus Port. Based on the its master plan, the project covered the construction of a new container pier, 4 and 5 star hotels, warehouses and parking space. The fourth pier in the plan to increase the port's capacity by 2.8 million TEU was unable to get the government's approval. This upgrade project would create thousands of new jobs, and demonstrate government’s commitment to facilitating investments. The completion of it would make the city of Piraeus a major shipping hub in the Mediterranean and the Piraeus Port an significant fruit in jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative.
