Background

Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal Pty Ltd planned to develop Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal Stage 1 Project , in Golding Point, Gladstone, Queensland, Australia. Monadelphous Engineering Pty Ltd was the construction contractor of the building of the 1.8 kilometre jetty and wharf as well as ship access platforms and conveyor belts. The project covered the development of a coal terminal in Port of Gladstone at Wiggins Island and its associated rail infrastructure. This Stage 1 project was designed to build the north of the entrance to the Calliope River and reach an annual capacity of 27 million tonnes from eight coal producers. In Apr 2008, the project received the environmental approval. The original expectation of the project was to start the first shipments in 2014 but delayed. The privately funded project would create more than 900 jobs for the Gladstone region and boost its export capacity to 150 million tonnes annually.
